Soccer Tennis, Throw-Ins, and CK Defense

Field Training | Sunday, Sept 5 | 4:30PM - 6:00PM | 1/2 Field

Lots of soccer this past week. Wanted a light session this afternoon, so decided to start off with some Soccer Tennis.

Moved on to throw-ins, trying to give the girls some ideas and options.

Finished the session with some set piece work, focusing on defending corner kicks. We’ll play a zone defense here as opposed to a man-to-man system, so it’s important that the girls know how to get set up quickly.

I ask the girls to remind each other about 3 things as they’re are getting organized -

  1. Be on your toes (athletic and ready)

  2. Face the field (don’t face the corner kick, but rather open your hips 45° to face up the field while still being able to see the ball)

  3. First to the ball (attack the ball with attitude and don’t let it drop in our danger area)

The communication is “Away!” when encouraging your teammates to clear the ball, and “Up!” once the ball is cleared, so we can leave attacking stragglers in a offside position.
